Northpointe Energy selected EDYMAC to support FEL-3 development of its £1.5B+ Municipal Solid Waste-to-SAF project in Ellesmere Port, UK, co-located at the Essar refinery.

EDYMAC provided technical and operational guidance as Northpointe prepared to enter FEL-3 engineering, including support for engineering contractor selection and the incorporation of lessons learned from previous FOAK waste-to-fuel projects.

Drawing on direct experience with the Fulcrum BioEnergy facility in Reno, Nevada, EDYMAC brought real-world operating lessons and knowledge of failure modes into the project development process—helping the team consider feedstock handling, equipment maintainability, operability, and reliability before those decisions became embedded in the engineering design.

EDYMAC also supported evaluation of FEL-3 engineering contractors, bringing an operational perspective to the capabilities required to develop and execute a complex waste-to-fuel facility.

The engagement focused on one of the most valuable opportunities in FOAK development: using lessons from an earlier project to improve the next project's design before capital is committed.

Northpointe Energy project

Move hard-won operating experience upstream—before it becomes a repetitive problem.

EDYMAC helps FOAK developers bring lessons from real plant operations into engineering decisions, contractor selection, and project execution strategy.

FOAK Lessons Learned

Translate operating experience, failure modes, and lessons from pioneering facilities into specific considerations for the next-generation project.

Engineering Partner Selection

Support FEL-3 engineering contractor selection with a focus on technical capability, operational understanding, maintainability, and ability to execute a complex FOAK facility.

Operational Design Integration

Bring plant-floor realities into engineering decisions around feedstock handling, equipment access, maintainability, controls, and operating reliability.

Pre-FID Risk Reduction

Identify and address technical and operational vulnerabilities early—while changes can still be made economically and before they become embedded in the project.

Hands-On Through Every Step

Principal-level technical advisory combining FOAK lessons learned, operational best practices, and engineering-partner evaluation to strengthen the project before FEL-3 execution.

FOAK Lessons Learned Integration

Translated operational experience from the Fulcrum BioEnergy facility and other pioneering waste-to-fuel projects into design considerations for the Northpointe development.

Engineering Partner Selection

Supported evaluation of FEL-3 engineering contractors, considering not only engineering capability but also their ability to incorporate operability, maintainability, and reliability into the design.

Plant-Floor Design Perspective

Introduced practical operating considerations into the pre-FEL-3 development process, including feedstock handling, equipment access, maintenance requirements, and plant operability.

Pre-FID Technical Risk Reduction

Applied hard-won operational truths to resolve systemic technical risks when design changes could still be made without the cost and disruption associated with late-stage modifications.

Strategic Impact & Outcomes

EDYMAC helped Northpointe bring real-world FOAK experience into project strategy, contractor selection, and engineering considerations ahead of a major capital commitment.

FOAK Lessons Transferred

Brought operational lessons from previous waste-to-fuel development into the project, helping the team account for known challenges before they became embedded in the new design.

Operational Contractor Selection

Applied criteria on maintainability, reliability, and practical operational design into the selection of FEL-3 contractor.

Best Practices Embedded

Introduced practical considerations around feedstock handling, equipment maintainability, access, and operability into early project development.

Risk Identification

Helped identify potential technical and operational vulnerabilities before FEL-3 execution, when design decisions remained more readily influenced.

Don't repeat a FOAK lesson you already paid to learn—EDYMAC brings real-world operating experience into technology selection, engineering, FEL development, and project execution—helping developers address risks before they become part of the post mortem.
